Read that sentence again. “An idea remains an idea until it is in your mind.” At first, it sounds like a duplication, a redundant phrase stating the obvious. Where else would an idea exist but in a mind? But think through it for a moment, and you will see that a profound distinction begins to emerge.
The ideas are the solution for problem you are facing, blue print of businesses, verses of poetry, any scientific theories, and philosophical answer to your questions. When you get an idea in your mind, the magic happens in the moment of internalization. It is the “AhA!!!” moment, the click of a key in a lock or the sudden illumination of a dark room.
But remember in this state, ideas are just a thought like an idea written in a book is merely ink on a page or a strategy shared in a meeting is just sound waves in the air. The world is saturated with ideas, flooded on the internet and social media feeds, vibrated in your meetings and resonated in the discussions you attend. They are just artefacts of your own web of experience or historical interest, they can be observed, catalogued, and even memorized, but you won’t be able to get any result from it. In simple words they are like “the seeds wrapped beautifully, attracting many people but just lying dormant on a shelf”.
In the kingdom of our own thoughts; an idea is born in the mind, which is perfect, bear high potential. and is flawless like your idea of a start-up will be the next unicorn, your story novel will be the future bestseller, your invention will change the world, your strategy will bring the results you have never seen before. But the reality is that an idea confined to the mind is just little more than a fantasy; is just a dream, as in the quiet of our imagination, the idea faces no friction, no criticism, and no failure.
Far too many ideas die at this stage due to our own fear of facing resistance, criticism and doubts to be a success; restricting us to take practical steps. An idea remains just an idea until it is in your mind and you don’t take practical steps to give it a life outside of your head like the seed laying on the shelf now needs to be planted in fertile soil.
Don’t let your idea to be the prisoner of the cage of your own mind; let the seed nourish in the fertile land; face the harsh weather, experience the realities of the world, let your theory to be practically tested, let it be out from the safe house of your imaginations and give it a life.
The journey from idea to change begins with a single, a courageous step and in this moment, you give your idea its first, fragile form in the real world. Take smallest step today to move your idea forward, find yourself a mentor or a coach and go for it; remember done is better than perfect, your first step or pitch or attempt may not be perfect; but now it exists so it can be improved with each passing day.
Your mind is a brilliant starting point; a nursery for creativity but it should be a launchpad, not a permanent safe home for your ideas or a museum where things are preserved but no longer live. The world is full of people with good ideas but you can be one of the few who has the courage to see what happens to that idea when it finally meets the light of day.
